Be a Disciple Series
The purpose of the Be a Disciple Series is to get students to know God personally, grow in their faith, and then to help others know God personally and grow in their faith just as Jesus commanded His disciples. It is designed to be taught to someone. If you are a student looking to go through this series find someone whose faith you trust and look up to, that can be a pastor, a small group leader, someone in the church, or even another student whose further along in their walk with God than you!
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
I) Gospel & What is a Disciple?
Purpose: The goal of this lesson can be summed up into 4 points. We want to shatter the false gospel that people
can be “good enough” for God and clearly communicate the payment Jesus made for them on the cross.
1. Not everyone is a Christian who says they are. True Christians produce the “fruit” of a changed life.
2. All of us are sinners and no one is “good enough” to get to God by good works.
3. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins through His death on the cross and resurrection! We can be forgiven and get a
fresh start!
4. We must accept His forgiveness and decide to make Jesus Lord (leader) of our lives to be saved.
John 3:16-17
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.
II) Follow
Purpose: This lesson marks the first step in your new brother or sister in Christ becoming a true disciple! There’s a long journey ahead for the both of you, but with God’s help lives will change!
1. To help your prospective disciple understand the “cost” of discipleship.
2. To show them what it means to be a Christian.
3. To introduce spiritual disciplines to them through the Wheel illustration.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
III) The Importance of the Bible
Purpose: To help your disciple see the importance of knowing God through spending regular time in His Word. To understand what it means to have a “quiet time” with God. To teach your disciple how to do a “SOAP” to study the Bible.
Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will achieve success.
IV) Scripture Memory
Purpose: To help your disciple see the value and importance of scripture memorization. To teach them how to effectively memorize scripture. To equip them with a plan that will help them continue memorizing scripture in the long run.
Psalm 119:11
I have treasured Your word in my heart,
So that I may not sin against You.

V) Prayer
Purpose: To show your prospective disciple why prayer is important. To teach them what kinds of things they should pray about. To show them how to keep a prayer list, and get them started praying over it.
Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
VI) The Importance of Fellowship
Purpose: To help your disciple see the importance of Christian fellowship. To learn the Heart Attitudes, and see how they could apply to the disciple’s life. To get involved in a local church, accountability group, and to help serve in some way if they are not already doing so.
Hebrews 10:24-25
and let’s consider how to encourage one another in love and good deeds, not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

VII) Evangelism
Purpose: To give your disciple an understanding of the need for evangelism. To get them started on the “3 Habits of Everyday Evangelism”. To get them to make an Impact List, and to get them praying over it and looking for opportunities to spend time with the people on that list.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
VIII) Love
Purpose: To clarify what the Bible means by “love”. To give the disciple an understanding how God expects a Christian to love others. To equip them to be able to create their own application after the reading of this lesson.
Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
IX) Holy Spirit
Purpose: To help your disciple begin to understand who the Holy Spirit is, and what He does in our lives. To help them understand what it means to be “filled with the Spirit.” To get them practicing “spiritual breathing” to maintain their walk with God.
John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.
X) Time Management
Purpose: To give your disciple a sense of godly time management and what that means. To help them begin the practice of “weekly syncs” and planning how to use their time.
Ephesians 5:15-17
So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
XI) The 5 Assurances
Purpose: To give a basic understanding of the “5 Assurances”, and what they mean for the disciple’s life To be able to do a “word study” to find out what a Bible verse has to say about any particular topic.
1 John 5:11-13
And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. The one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
XII) The Goal
Purpose: To help the disciple understand what God’s ultimate mission for the world is. To help them develop a personal vision for what God could use their life for. To commission them to continue on in discipleship with the Make Disciples series.
2 Timothy 2:2
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.
